State Supervisory/Trainee Appraiser Requirements
Requirements for training as an appraiser vary from state to state. While having a state supervisor-trainee program is not required, most states do have supervisor-trainee programs, either meeting the minimum requirements set by the Appraiser Qualifications Board of The Appraisal Foundation or exceeding those requirements.
State programs generally regulate experience, education, inspections (number or timeframe), experience logs, and other requirements of the supervisor and trainee. Trainees and supervisors must be aware of the requirements and responsibilities within their particular state.
The Appraisal Foundation provides aspiring appraisers a resource page which includes additional information on how to become an appraiser. Additionally, you will find information on the newly adopted Practical Applications of Real Estate Appraisal (PAREA) which offers an alternative pathway to fulfill the experience requirements when a Supervisory Appraiser cannot be found; contact your state to see if it accepts PAREA in part or by whole.
